Children as Leaders for Tomorrow

“Education is the most powerful tool; you can use to change the world.”

Nelson Mandela.

Children are not born leaders, even if we like to assume that they are. Children grow into being leaders. Specific decisions they make or that are made on their behalf foster their path to becoming a great leader in their families, communities and society. Children have a major role to play in any community they belong to and they should be given the support to discover what role that is and how to take it on. It is very important for young people to feel like they belong. Because once they feel like they belong, they start to make connections and set down roots. The safety that a sense of belonging provides, is a launching pad for leadership growth and development. Children can start to take control of their lives and the choices they make. Children move on from personal responsibility to inspiring others. Once they get to that stage, they can practice public speaking, exemplary living and responsibility. Once a young person understands that they are part of something bigger than themselves, and in this case, it would be a global community, they have a cause to be not only be a leader but a responsible and just leader.  These may sound like very profound things for children to take in, absorb and understand. But in my time as an educator I have discovered that, children are very smart beings that just need some guidance and direction to take off, spread their wings and fly.
